As closing day approaches, we know you're eager to pack up and move into your new home.

But if you want to make some improvements to your new space, you may want to consider keeping the house empty for a few days to take on some projects.

Keep reading for six improvements to make before you settle in!

New Keys

Call a locksmith to have your locks changed before moving in. While the previous homeowners will hand over their keys at closing, they may have given a friend or relative a spare. New locks ensure that you and your family are the only ones with access to your new home.

Paint the Interior

Painting the interior of a home is much easier when there is no furniture in the way. Instead of unpacking your belongings, only to move and cover the furniture in order to paint, schedule any interior painting to be completed before moving day. When you do move in, the fresh paint will help set the tone for your style, giving you a fresh canvas.

Address the Floors and Ceiling

Much like the walls, it’s optimal to make changes to the floor or ceiling when rooms are bare. Whether you want to remove popcorn ceilings or refinish floors, an empty house helps speed up the process. Work on ceilings and floors can usually be completed within a week. While this will delay your move-in date, it’s often worth it if you can stay in your current residence for a few extra days.

Electrical and Plumbing Upgrades

Electrical and plumbing upgrades can be completed after you move in, but if you know there are issues, completing the work first can make your home much more comfortable. This may include upgrading outlets, replacing a hot water heater, or adding in programmable thermostats.

Call Pest Control

If pest control is a must, you’ll want them to visit your home while you are away. Pests can cause damage to both your home and your health, so make it a priority to get any issues under control.

Deep Clean

Cleaning is a must when moving into a new place, even if the home looks neat and tidy. You can hire someone for a deep clean, or roll up your sleeves and do it yourself. You can also use this time to add organizers to closets, cabinets, and drawers. Knowing that the space is clean and sanitized on move-in day eliminates the need to clean as you unpack.

Not everyone is able to wait the extra time before moving in, but if you can plan for these improvements in advance, it will make a big difference!
