If you live in an apartment or condo, your balcony may be the only outdoor space you can call your own. With this in mind, it’s important to create a space that you can enjoy. No matter the size of your balcony, a little planning and some intentional design can help you create the perfect outdoor retreat or a place to entertain on summer evenings.

First Steps

An important first step is to find out what is and is not allowed in your building. Are barbecues permitted? Can you replace the flooring, or get creative with your railing? It is important to ask these questions at the start, to avoid a disappointing change of plans later on.

Function

Once you know what you are free to do, decide the primary function of your space. Do you want a place to read and sunbath? Cook out? Entertain?

Choosing your balcony’s primary purpose will help you make functional design decisions and make the most of your space. Depending on size, you may be able to use your balcony for multiple purposes, such as including a dining area and a separate seating area. If you have a smaller balcony, it’s best to choose one or the other to avoid overcrowding your space.

Furniture

Next, it’s time to choose furniture. Keep size and sightlines in mind so that you don’t block your view. Some outdoor furniture intended for backyards may look too big and overwhelming on a balcony. Consider smaller pieces with less visual weight. Measure your balcony and furniture before you buy and consider taping out a layout on the floor to ensure adequate traffic flow. You want to be able to comfortably navigate your balcony without feeling cramped. Make sure to measure the door as well, to ensure your new furniture will fit through!

Design

When it comes to design, it’s a good idea to incorporate elements from your interior into your outdoor space. Using similar colors, textures, and finishes will help your balcony feel like an extension of your interior. Just like an interior space, you can never go wrong with a neutral color scheme with a few strategic pops of color. If your building allows it, consider replacing your balcony flooring. If not, look into removable wood decking squares or an outdoor rug for an easy, temporary update. If you are allowed to change up the fencing, this is another great way to personalize your space.

Details

Don’t forget the little details when designing your balcony. Potted plants add vibrancy, so pick some up at the greenhouse or garden center. Include lighting for when you use your balcony at night. Lanterns, battery operated candles or string lights are all options that add to your space both in the day and at night. Finally, just like in an indoor space, don’t forget ample storage for things like grill accessories or furniture cushions in the winter. Many coffee tables or ottomans have storage inside that won’t take up additional floor space.

It’s easy to ignore your balcony, but with a bit of planning it can easily become your favorite place to spend summer evenings. Be sure to plan ahead, learn the rules of your building, and keep your end goal in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to your perfect balcony.
