The weather is dropping here in New Jersey, with winter on its way. As gathering sizes are still limited and with many working remotely, this doesn’t just mean more time inside - it means more time at home.

How can you avoid cabin fever? By embracing winter! In a recent New York Times article, the author spoke of three ways Scandinavians keep positive during the coldest season of the year: get outside, make winter special, and appreciate the season.

To make it easier to welcome the winter, we’ve gathered some tips to help you turn your home into a wonderland. Keep reading for seven tips to make your home a cozy retreat this winter.

Stoke the Fire

If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace, you already know the glowing embers and warmth instantly create an intimate and comforting atmosphere. For those who don’t have a fireplace, you can improvise! Portable fireplaces can be added to any room, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and designs.

Seasonal Scents

Comforting scents are an instant way to create a sense of relaxation. If you love the ambiance of a flickering flame, stock up on candles to light in the evenings. Another option for a smell-good home is using essential oils in diffusers. These not only offer aromatherapy, they can also humidify small spaces.

Break out the Blankets and Rugs

No one likes cold feet. Consider adding more rugs to your home. A cozy rug in the living room and bedroom is a great place to start, but what about the kitchen and bathroom? These are the rooms where we are often standing for longer periods of time, and a warm rug underfoot can make all the difference.

You can also bring your favorite blankets for added warmth within reach in every room. Fold a blanket over the back of the couch, keep an extra one on the bed, and put out a basket with extra blankets.

Winter Greenery

Plants are not limited to warm months! There are many types of greenery you can bring indoors throughout the winter months that add a natural element to your home. Holly, blue spruce, and even pine cones can be used to make centerpieces, while succulents, spider plants, and English ivy all do well indoors.

Stock Up in the Kitchen

If you love to cook, winter is the perfect time to spend some time in the kitchen. Soups and stews are warming comfort dishes, and baked goods are a treat for everybody. No need to limit your creations to food: stock up on tea, hot chocolate, and wine. For those who love a cocktail, this winter may be the perfect time to amp up your mixology skills!

Reading Nook

Any bookworms out there? Create a reading nook with blankets, pillows, and perfect lighting. If you can find a space away from the social hub of the home, your nook will become a private getaway you can return to whenever you want.

Activity Center

Worried about too much screen time? Create an activity center that everyone can enjoy. Set up a table (away from the TV!) where you can play board games, work on jigsaw puzzles, do arts and crafts, or learn a new skill. Keeping the mind and body active is a great way to keep the winter blues away.
