Study hard for the real estate exam because you can't get a license until you pass it. But also know that will be the last time you will ever use the word 'hectare' in a sentence. As a new agent, there are really only three things you need to understand about real estate.

1. Getting the business IS the business

Almost 90% of the people who get into real estate quit in less than five years because they underestimated the sacrifice of time, money, and energy required to build a book of business. So as soon as you get your license, sit down with your broker or a coach and make a plan for bringing in clients. Especially during the first two or three years, you need to be obsessed with the quest. Let your friends and family know that you'll be back soon, but during the building stage, you need to be all in on developing your career.

2. Sometimes you'll feel like a therapist

For some people, personal connections are their favorite part of the business. For others, it's uncomfortable and awkward. Buying or selling a home is a very personal experience. As their real estate agent, you will get a very close look at your client's finances, family dynamics, and how they live. You will probably also witness a life event (wedding, death, new baby, job change, etc.). When things go sideways (something always does), emotions can take over. Respect your client's experience and understand that they may have some strong emotions along the way. Be there for it, but don't take it personally.

3. The best company to work for is the company that works best for YOU

There's a list of new licensees in your area, and it is for sale. Every major brand buys these lists and tries to pull in as many fresh bodies as possible. So how do you choose which company is right for you? It depends. When starting out, look for a company or team that will offer you consistent coaching and support. Don't 1. worry too much about splits at this point but do look at the growth opportunities. And remember that it's ok to switch! The office that is perfect for you now might not be the same one that's perfect for you five years down the road.
