Moving from a small town to a city can be a huge culture shock. While some people are equipped for the hustle and bustle of city life, others can feel overwhelmed by the large crowds and fast-paced lifestyle that comes with living in a city. Here are a few things to consider when considering moving to a city.

Pros of City Life

More To Do

A big city has a range of activities you can’t get in the suburbs without a long drive. There are constantly new experiences offered. Nightlife, concerts, plays, museums, parks, and sports games are all activities that will be readily available to you.

Save on Gas

No car? No problem! Public transportation is a huge advantage to living in a city. Subways, buses, and ferries are a significant benefit of most cities, saving you the hassle of driving in traffic and spending money on gas. Many parts of cities are also very walkable.

Opportunities for Career Growth and Higher Salary

Many employers are willing to pay their workers more to offset the high cost associated with living in a city. Cities also have countless career opportunities compared to suburbs and small towns.

Dining Options

Living in a city means being minutes away from tons of authentic, delicious restaurants. You could try a different cuisine every weekend and expand your palette, or stick to a few of your favorite local fast food joints.

Cons of City Life

Higher Cost of Living

Typical living expenses such as rent, utilities, and groceries tend to be slightly higher in big cities. You also have additional living costs when living in a city, like laundry, if you don’t have an in-unit washer and dryer. You may have to account for expenses associated with having a car, such as parking permits and garage fees. To cut the cost of food, gas and everyday products - you’ll have to get creative!

Less Peace & Quiet

It’s no secret that cities are much more densely populated than small towns and suburbs, and as a result, they tend to be much noisier. Traffic, trains, people, and airports contribute to this. On days of big sporting events or concerts, cities are likely to be even louder. But if you’d like to be in the heart of the hustle and bustle, the city is calling you!

Less Space

Moving to a city means downsizing for most people. In many cities, you will be hard-pressed to find somewhere other than an apartment to live in while staying within your budget. And its more challenging (but still possible!) to find the yard space or patio you may be used to.
