One thing most people have been craving this year is more space. As we settle into fall, cooler temperatures and shorter days mean we’ll be spending less time outside and more time in our homes.

Fortunately, design experts have figured out ways to amplify your space. No matter how much square footage you have, incorporate these tips in any room to create a feeling of spaciousness you can enjoy all year long.

1. Draw the Eye Upward

Often, we look at a room and see the space wall-to-wall. Don’t forget about the space you have overhead! There are several ways you can draw the eye upward:

  • Hang shelves near the ceiling (this also creates bonus storage!).

  • Bring in a tall bookshelf or dresser.

  • Install vertical shiplap or wallpaper with vertical stripes.

  • Paint the ceiling.

2. Go See-through

Transparent materials allow you to see more. Select a coffee table with a glass top for the living room. You can also choose chairs and sofas with legs instead of skirts that reach the floor. Being able to see under and around furniture pieces makes any room feel larger.

3. Simplify

Simplify each room by getting rid of anything that does not serve a purpose. Instead of displaying everything all year, split your decor into four groups. Each season, display new items. You’ll take up less living space and will be less likely to get sick of your decor!

4. Sneaky Storage

No matter how much you eliminate, you’ll still need some storage space. Multi-purpose pieces of furniture often double as storage. An entryway bench, flip-top ottoman, and drawers under a bed all create extra storage.

5. Lighten Up

White walls reflect light, making a room appear larger. By painting walls, trim, and ceiling the same shade, you’ll take it to the next level. In addition, select light and neutral colors for countertops, flooring, and accent pieces.

6. Let the Outdoors Work its Magic

When possible, face furniture toward windows. Whether your home has skyline views or a beautiful property to look at, being able to see outside expands the interior space. Also, no need to hang curtains in smaller homes, as they close off the room.

7. Step Away from the Wall

Instead of pushing your furniture up to the wall, leave space. A central layout draws the eye to the middle of the room instead of the wall. This helps to eliminate the feeling of being cramped.

8. Mirror, Mirror

Strategically placed mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of more space. Place a mirror across from a window to bring more light into the room, or place a mirror behind an end table to make it look like another room is behind it.

9. Make a Statement

One large piece of statement art is better than several smaller pieces of art on the wall. This goes for furniture as well: instead of a sofa and chair, select one larger couch with seating for all.

Go ahead and create the space you’ve been waiting for!
