You’ve just moved into your new home, and now it’s time for the fun part-decorating! Before you jump right in, it’s important to consider a few things to ensure that your interior design vision becomes a reality. First, you need to determine what style your space will be.

Not sure? We’ve got a few of the most popular interior design style trends for you to consider!

1. Traditional

True to its name, the traditional style is one of the oldest and most classic styles on this list. Inspired by 18th and 19th century English and French design, this style tends toward matching furniture sets and neutral color palettes. It often features expensive textiles, such as linen and silk in various patterns like stripes and florals. Conscious layering and a sense of structure are hallmarks of this style.

2. Modern

The modern style popped up in the early-to-mid 20th century. This style is characterized by square forms and cool neutrals. Decoration is usually kept to a minimum, allowing wall art to become the focal point of a room. Smooth surfaces are favored, like metal, glass, and chrome. Brightly colored accents break up the neutrals that dominate the style.

3. Eclectic

The eclectic style can be difficult to pin down - after all, it’s based on variety and creative use of design elements. When it comes to eclectic design, there’s a fine line between collected and chaotic. This design style seeks to unite elements of various styles, textures, and colors into one united aesthetic. Variety is key and done well the eclectic style creates a unique blend of old and new.

4. Minimalist

If there is an opposite of eclectic design, it’s minimalism. This style is inspired by Japanese design and firmly believes that less is more, with interiors that usually stick to neutral color palettes. This style is devoid of pattern, making texture that much more essential. The minimalist style is instantly recognizable by its clean, geometric lines and open space. Every piece of furniture in a minimalist home has a purpose; there’s no place for extra clutter or decoration.

5. Industrial

As the name suggests, industrial design incorporates the factory and machine aesthetic into your living spaces. Wood and metal are popular elements of this style and may be paired with antique elements and found objects. Exposed brick and pipes add flavor to this style. While it may sound cold and uninviting, this style is softened by a warm neutral color palette and textiles.

6. Coastal

The coastal style is bright, breezy, and organic. Inspired by the beach, this style incorporates light colors like beige and white with pops of blue reminiscent of the sea. This style is all about bringing the feeling of the coast indoors. Because of this, window treatments are usually minimal, with a preference for sheer fabrics. Wood, jute fiber, and other natural materials abound in this style.

7. Modern Farmhouse

No list of interior design styles would be complete without a mention of the modern farmhouse style. Expertly combining traditional farmhouse and modern elements, this style has become extremely popular in recent years. Like the industrial style, modern farmhouses incorporate found objects and lots of texture. Shiplap, mixed metals, and coarse textiles bring traditional farmhouse to mind. Sleek lighting fixtures, blacks and whites, and open concept floorplans bring a taste of the modern. Greenery is another staple of the style, and plants can be found in most modern farmhouse interiors.

These are only a few of the many interior design styles out there. Whether you choose one style or a mix of several, knowing your interior design style is an important first step in decorating the home of your dreams.
