Even if you don’t spend many waking hours in your bedroom, it should be a place of comfort and relaxation. Those with small bedrooms may think this is near impossible! But if there’s anything to learn from skilled interior designers, it’s that achieving a space you love is always within reach.

Go for a Simple Layout

Your bed is the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom. Some people make the mistake of cramming it into a corner to create more floor space, but this eliminates flow in the room. Instead, place the bed in the center of the main wall, so there is room to walk on either side of the bed.

Choose Floating Bedside Tables

When selecting furniture, you don’t want to go too big, because it can make the room feel smaller. However, miniature tables next to a bed usually look out of place. Some people eliminate bedside tables altogether, but if like having a shelf next to you, opt for floating tables or shelves. This keeps space open underneath, allowing line of sight to go all the way to where the floor meets the wall, making the room feel larger.

Amplify Natural Light

Natural light is sought after in every room, and the bedroom is no different. Keep the windows clear of any furniture or clutter, and if you need drapes, go for sheer. When you wake up in the morning, open up the shades to let light in throughout the day.

Create Storage Space

Storage is essential for eliminating clutter, but this doesn’t mean you have to stuff in more furniture. There is plenty of furniture that does double duty, like a bed with storage drawers underneath, or a bench that opens.

Add Color

Pops of color adds a new dimension to small spaces when done correctly. You can bring in color with an accent wall, area rug, colorful blanket, or throw pillows. If you’ve been stuck on neutral and don’t know where to start, try incorporating some black-and-white contrast.

Mount Lighting Fixtures

There’s no need to take up coveted space with a table or floor lamp. Sconces mounted to the wall are ideal in a small room, and can be found in any style. Sconces with swinging arms near the bedroom are great for reading in bed.

Use Mirrors and Artwork to Your Advantage

Instead of a gallery of images in the bedroom, go for one large piece of artwork above the bed. You can also play around with well-placed mirrors, which reflect light and create a brighter space.
